Advantages, Disadvantages, Applications, and Working Principle of BLDC MotorBrushless DC Motor

The main purpose of a motor is to convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. When a conductor is placed within a magnetic field, mechanical force is generated. The direction of this force is determined by Flemingās LeftāHand Rule.
BLDC Motor: A BLDC motorāalso known as a brushless dc motorāis a synchronous motor powered by direct current. It uses electronic devices (such as a closed-loop controller) to commutate the DC power.
Construction of a BLDC Motor
It uses semiconductor control to manage stator current, thereby achieving maximum torque at a given speed. The stator comprises three-phase windings, and the rotor is a permanent magnet.
- The rotor is the rotating part of the machine, while the stator remains stationary.
- Controlling the stator controls the motor speed, implemented by adjusting the inverterās DC input voltage via a 3 phase bldc motor driver or 3 phase brushless motor driver.
- The shaft is the rotating component that connects to the motor-driven loads.
BLDC motors also include rotor position sensors, producing electrical signals indicating the rotorās current position. The stator windings are driven by a three-phase inverter electronic driver.
Permanent magnet brushless DC motors use Hall sensors spaced at 60° electrical intervals. These sensors output logical ā1ā when aligned with the rotorās Nāpole and ā0ā otherwise.
In BLDC motors:
- The magnetic fields of the stator and rotor remain stationary relative to each other.
Ā· The drive circuit is powered by a DC source.
Ā· This motor has no brushes.
Working Principle of a BLDC Motor
When the stator windings are connected to a three-phase supply, input power is applied and current flows in the stator, causing the rotor to rotate in a specific direction.
When one phase is energized, the stator produces north and south poles. The statorās Sāpole repels the rotorās Sāpole and attracts its Nāpole. Because of the magnetic field from the magnets and the energized stator poles, clockwise torque is generated.
The stator magnetic flux is proportional to the stator current, while the rotorās field remains constant. Energizing the stator phases in the order R ā Y ā B ā R causes the motor to rotate clockwise.
Advantages of BLDC Motors
- 01. Brushless design reduces brush replacements and lowers maintenance costs.
Ā· 02. BLDC motors offer advanced control over speed and position, particularly when combined with bldc motor controller, brushless dc motor controller, or bldc foc controller.
Ā· 03. BLDC motors have a longer lifespan than brushed DC motors.
Ā· 04. Without brushes, sparking is minimized and the risk of burnout is very low.
Ā· 05. BLDC motors provide a high torque-to-speed ratioāideal for robotic arms and medical applications.
Ā· 06. With no electromagnets, heat generation is reduced.
Ā· 07. They operate under feedback control enabling precise speed and torque adjustment, often via an industrial dc motor controller or sensorless bldc controller.
Ā· 08. These motors are suitable for low-load or no-load operation.
Ā· 09. Without brushes, operational noise is lower.
Ā· 10. These motors are used in electrical applications requiring low noise, such as vrf air conditioning systems and quiet HVAC setups.
Disadvantages of BLDC Motors
- 01. BLDC motors operate at relatively low speeds; low-speed vibrations can occur.
Ā· 02. These motors are more expensive due to required electronics like brushless dc motor controller.
Ā· 03. Feedback loop designs make wiring and operation more complex.
Ā· 04. They require an electronic commutation controllerāsuch as a 3 phase bldc motor controllerāto switch voltage to the coils.
Ā· 05. Without a commutator, specialized electronics are necessary.
Ā· 06. They need three Hall sensors for rotor position detection or must use a sensorless bldc controller alternative.
Applications of BLDC Motors
- 01. Used in hybrid and electric vehicles and other equipment, often integrated with inverter heat pump for swimming pool, air source heat pump controller, heat pump control board, and power supply pcb board systems.
Ā· 02. Used in robotic arms for precise motion control in robotics and industrial automation.
Ā· 03. BLDC motors drive computer hard drives and DVD players.
Ā· 04. They power fans, washing machines, dryers, pumps, blowers, and compressorsāoften supported by compressor driver board, variable frequency drive air compressor, and hvac circuit board solutions.
